I am because You are

Late evening 10 years ago on May 11, 2 weeks overdue, I was induced at the Cambridge University Rosy Hospital.

32+ hrs of labor later, I was taken to the OR and in the wee hours of the morning my husband was given a little pink package and he began the most important journey in his life.

A lot was hazy that day, but I distinctly remember coming to and opening my eyes and noticing that I was on a bed which was being moved into a massive elevator and I looked down to see the most beautiful baby on my chest and that even in that half-awake state I was holding her. Protectively. A few seconds later I drifted off again.

I look at my child today, this funny, smartypants, articulate girl and feel like it was just yesterday I brought her home in a tiny little car seat all pink and swaddled but sitting like a floppy Daddy’s princess.

As moms, we do quite a few things to celebrate our children’s birthday. We make the day special for them. Some go all out and have a huge party, and some have a lovely quite small celebration.I genuinely feel, we do this with so much enthusiasm and put so much of ourselves into it because the birth or the adoption of our child is a celebration of our life, our story.

We did something remarkable, amazing, beautiful, and sometimes at very high costs. Some of us did not make it. Some have scars and other complications. So it becomes even more important to us. My mother used to say that the birth of a child is a second chance at life, a new lease at life. I think it is very true. It’s after having my girl that I started appreciating my mother’s journey.

The Celebration of Mother’s day was low key this year, but I love that I get to celebrate the baby that made me a mom as much as the joy of having her and watching her grow into a fantastic young lady.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there.

And Happy birthday to my baby girl.
